Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday defended police searches conducted in opposition party offices and activists’ homes earlier during the day, framing them as “preventative measures rather than acts of repression”.

The protests have turned violent, with around 300 people detained and dozens injured in clashes between protesters and police, outside the parliament building in Tbilisi.
