This was such a classic that even the great Mohamed Salah, in what might be the finest farewell lap in any Premier League career, could not quite bend the evening to his iron will – although it would be fair to say he made a very good attempt.

There was a doubt over whether Alexander Isak would play this game because of injury but pretty much everyone watching will be glad he did. The striker was at his very best, creating chances and causing the Liverpool defence all sorts of problems and capped the display with an excellent goal.
