The jury has reached a verdict in the murder trial of former Sangamon County deputy Sean Grayson for the fatal police shooting of Sonya Massey.

The killing of Massey, a Black mother of two who struggled with mental health issues, touched off a wave of protests and a federal probe.

Patrick O'Callahan, the deputy chief for Orange Village Police Department who has been charged with drunken driving, was also at the center of a civil rights lawsuit over a police shooting.

The conviction against former deputy sheriff Sean Grayson, who is white, carries a potential sentence of between four and 20 years.

Breanna Evans faces two counts of attempted murder, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle and one count of shooting from a vehicle.

The attack was a targeted act of violence, "believed to be motivated by the assailant’s anti-religious beliefs against the Mormon religious community," the FBI said Friday.

A Boston man was arrested for a shooting that Boston police said left an innocent woman with "life-altering" injuries.
