After nearly 10 hours of jury deliberation, a Lafayette County circuit judge declared a mistrial on Wednesday in the capital murder case trial of Sheldon Timothy Herrington Jr., a Grenada native accused of killing a fellow University of Mississippi graduate to preserve their secret sexual relationship.

A jury was deadlocked in the Sheldon Timothy Herrington Jr., murder trial Wednesday. They could not reach a decision in the death of Jimmie Jay Lee.

Though the jury deliberated for nine-and-a-half hours, they eventually told the judge they believed it was impossible to come to an agreement, and a mistrial was declared.

Day 7 of the Tim Herrington Jr. murder trial began with Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCutchen taking the stand. Herrington is charged with killing Jimmie “Jay” Lee. McCutchen testified that more than a dozen people were interviewed as persons of interest during the investigation.

Two weeks after Lee's disappearance, authorities arrested Herrington, 24, who was later indicted on a capital murder charge in connection to the case. Herrington was a 22-year-old Ole Miss graduate from Grenada at the time of the alleged offense.

Things ended in a mistrial during the capital murder trial for Sheldon Timothy Herrington Junior.The 24-year-old is being charged with Capital Murder.He’s accused of kidnapping and killing his Ole Miss classmate Jimmy Jay Lee in July of 2022.

Just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, a judge declared a mistrial in the murder trial for University of Mississippi student Jimmie “Jay” Lee. The jury said it could not reach a verdict after more than nine hours.
