On a day when many families gather across the country to give thanks, a National Guard member’s family is mourning her death after an ambush-style shooting in Washington, DC, as her colleague fights for his life while their West Virginia communities ask for prayers.

One of the two West Virginia National Guard members who was wounded Wednesday in what authorities described as an ambush-style shooting in Washington, D.C., has died, President Trump said Thursday, and the second Guard member is "fighting for his life.

President Trump said the suspected shooter came to the U.S. from Afghanistan in 2021. The administration plans to send 500 more Guard personnel to the nation's capital in response to the attack.

The suspect came to the U.S. in September 2021, a relative told NBC News. He has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, according to four senior law enforcement sources.
