One person was rescued from the 3rd floor, two others were assisted out, and firefighters are searching for a possible fourth victim of a Westport multi-use building early Wednesday morning.

Crews with the Kansas City Fire Department responded just before 6 a.m. to the 4100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, near Westport Road, on reports of a fire. Upon arrival, crews reported heavy fire and smoke from apartments on the second floor of a three story building, said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, a KCFD spokesman.

Fire officials said units arrived at the scene and reported an active brush fire alongside the highway that was “rapidly spreading” due to the terrain and wind.
