An arctic air mass will channel temperatures 20-30 degrees below already historically cold January averages. The South braced for a rare winter storm.

Temperatures will hover in the single digits above and below zero across the Front Range and Eastern Plains, but overnight wind chills will make it feel as cold as minus 30.

A few breaks in the clouds today can give us some sunshine positivity, but the extreme cold is stubborn and sticks around for a bit longer.

An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for the northern South Plains, with a Cold Weather Advisory elsewhere from 6 PM this evening until noon on Tuesday. If you must be outside, dress in layers and cover exposed skin to avoid frost bite. Tuesday will remain cold especially in the morning thanks to the wind chill.

A potent surge of Arctic air starts settling in Monday evening as a massive dip in the jet stream pulls in frigid air across the entire eastern half of the country. Temperatures are set to drop as low as 20 degrees below average through Thursday with the highs only reaching the teens and some lows even plunging below zero.

GREEN BAY - Extreme cold weather hit the Green Bay area Monday morning with subzero temperatures and wind chills reaching minus 27. The extreme cold will last through Tuesday before warming up Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

The coldest weather of the winter is here and won’t relent until late this week. Highs may not escape the 20s until Friday; on Wednesday, they may not surpass the teens. While it’s cold, it’s dry. Significant snow is not in the forecast this week. By the weekend, temperatures will start to moderate some.
