Amazon is planning to close its 19 UK grocery stores less than five years after it launched the till-free sites in London. Amazon said five of the stores earmarked for closure would be converted in to Whole Foods stores, a fresh and whole food brand which Amazon owns.

In the US, Amazon shut a number of Fresh stores in 2023, as part of a wider cost-cutting effort, before opening 21 new outlets last year. It closed the last of its “Fresh Pickup” stores — where customers purchase groceries online before driving to a location to pick up orders — in January 2024.
