LOS ANGELES -- Marvel’s first family has finally found box office gold. “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” the first film about the superheroes made under the guidance of Kevin Feige and the Walt Disney Co., earned $118 million in its first weekend in 4,125 North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday.

First Steps" took the top spot at the box office this weekend, knocking DC Studios' "Superman" to second place.

“ The Fantastic Four: First Steps ” stretched its arms around $57 million from 4,125 theaters across Friday and preview screenings. Per Disney ‘s numbers, that’s the second-biggest opening day of the calendar year, ranking just behind “A Minecraft Movie” ($57.11 million). The film is playing Imax and other premium large format auditoriums.
