PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The United States has notified the United Nations that it is freezing funding to a UN-backed mission in Haiti tasked with fighting gangs trying to seize full control of the country’s capital, the United Nations said Tuesday.

More than $13 million in U.S. funding for an international security force helping fight armed gangs in Haiti has been frozen under President Donald Trump's 90-day pause on foreign aid, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

As hundreds of armed gang members, entrenched in the hills above Haiti’s capital, await orders to attack the last enclaves not currently under their control, the multinational fight to end their terror is being impeded by the Trump administration’s freeze on foreign aid.

UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that the US will freeze KSh 1.6 billion in funding for the Haiti mission led by the Kenya police.
