In a recent advisory, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called on Congress to include a cancer risk warning in the warning labels on alcohol. He says alcohol is the third-leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., behind tobacco use and obesity.

The surgeon general’s report said the lifetime risk of developing any alcohol-related cancer jumped to 19 percent (19 of 100 women) among those who consumed one alcoholic drink each day (seven drinks a week). At this level, the lifetime risk of breast cancer increased to 13.1 percent, or 13 of 100 women.

The top U.S. health official is calling for all alcoholic beverages to carry a warning label about cancer risk.

There are about 100,000 alcohol-related cancer cases and about 20,000 alcohol-related cancer deaths each year, according to the new report.

It’s the third-leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States, after tobacco and obesity, the office said.
