The death of South African soldiers on a Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has sparked fierce debate about the deployment of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers there.

SADC leaders converge in Harare for an emergency summit following the deaths of 16 peacekeepers and the capture of Goma by M23 rebels in DRC. The crisis meeting comes as tensions escalate between Rwanda and DRC,

"Things are relatively quiet at the moment, and our soldiers are also in a safe place," Ramaphosa said during a press briefing in Pretoria. His statement comes a day after four members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) were killed in fighting against the rebel group in eastern DRC.
