The U.S. Department of Agriculture is trying to reverse the firing of some employees who were involved in responding to the nation’s growing bird flu outbreak, officials said this week.

The department is trying to rehire the employees as avian influenza causes egg prices to soar and as Elon Musk’s DOGE makes sweeping cuts to government agencies.

The Agriculture Department is scrambling to rehire several workers it fired as part of President Donald Trump’s broad cuts because they were involved in the government’s response to the ongoing bird flu outbreak that has devastated egg and poultry farms over the past three years.

The US Department of Agriculture last week issued a conditional license for an avian flu vaccine for use in chickens, as an outbreak of a newer variant ravages poultry flocks, contributing to the sky high price of eggs.

The Trump administration is working to “rectify" the termination of several employees over the weekend that were working to combat bird flu, the agency said.

The USDA says "several" staffers working on the bird flu response were terminated over the weekend, and "we are working to swiftly rectify the situation and rescind those letters."
