Billionaire Elon Musk ‘s company on Thursday sent a letter to local officials requesting an election to turn what it calls Starbase — the South Texas site where SpaceX builds and launches its massive Starship rockets — into an incorporated city. Residents of the area known as Starbase submitted the petition, according to the company.

Citing all the work the company has put into the region, employees are requesting a special election in Cameron County to incorporate a city.

He changed his own residence in 2021 from California to Texas, where there is no state income tax on individuals.

Elon Musk said on social media platform X on Thursday that the SpaceX headquarters will now officially be in the city of Starbase, Texas.

SpaceX’s next mission has nothing to do with rockets. Instead, it’s aiming to turn its Starbase facility into a new Texas city.
