While we aren’t expected to shatter any records with regard to cold temperatures in the coming few days, the coldest arctic airmass to impact the Buffalo-Niagara region in years is here and will tighten its grip through midweek.

Be prepared for difficult travel early next week. An arctic airmass will bring the coldest air in almost six years to the region. The cold air will also produce significant lake effect snow.

Along with widespread snow, lake effect bands off Lake Ontario and Lake Erie are expected to intensify. Snowfall totals could reach 4 to 8 inches in areas like northern Cayuga and Wayne counties, while localized amounts may exceed 12 inches in areas under persistent lake effect bands.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - After a milder start to the weekend, Central New York is looking ahead to a return of localized lake-effect snow and bitter cold. You can blame a quick-moving East Coast snowstorm for the harsh winter weather on the way.

Winds out of the north-northwest will bring persistent snow bands to the immediate lakeshore tonight with a widespread 1-3" of snow expected along US-31 by tomorrow morning. Winds shift to become northwesterly Sunday which will allow for lake-effect snow to spread further inland, though most snowfall will stay west of US-131.

Lake-effect snow is possible starting late Sunday night off of Lake Ontario. Light to moderate lake snow south of Buffalo through early Monday morning

More than 650,000 people in New York and parts of Pennsylvania remain under Lake-Effect Snow Warnings after 14-24 inches of snow already blanketed parts of the region.
