The White House defended the Maine lawmaker who made a controversial Facebook post about a trans athlete Wednesday and once again criticized Maine’s policies.

President Donald Trump sparred with Maine’s Democratic governor during a meeting of governors at the White House on Friday, with Gov. Janet Mills telling the Republican president, “We’ll see you in court,” over his push to deny federal funding to the state over transgender athletes.

Proclaiming his administration as "federal law," the president demanded that Maine comply with his executive order banning transgender women from participating in women and girls' sports. Mills told the president that the state won't be intimidated and reiterated her vow to challenge him in court if he denies the state millions in federal cash.

After issuing an executive order barring transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports last month, President Trump targeted the state for scrutiny.

The Maine Attorney General's Office says no one from their office was interviewed as part of the Office for Civil Rights investigation.
