It’s going to be a close race for New Jersey governor as voters prepare to head to the polls on Tuesday. The newest PIX11 News-Emerson College-The Hill poll showed Democratic nominee Mikie Sherrill holding a slight lead over Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli.

As the only gubernatorial races held in the year following a presidential election, the contests have long served as the first major test of voter sentiment toward the party holding the White House. In every race for governor since 1973, one or both states have elected a governor from a party different than that of the sitting president.

While attention has been paid largely to the competitive race for New Jersey governor, Garden State voters should also know that the entire General Assembly is up for grabs in November's general election. All 80 seats in the Legislature's lower chamber will be on the ballot. The current breakdown of the Assembly is 52 Democrats and 28 Republicans.
