The Kremlin stars (Russian: Кремлёвские звёзды, romanized: Kremlyovskiye zvyozdy) are pentagonal luminescent ruby stars, installed in the 1930s on five towers of the Moscow Kremlin, replacing gilded eagles that had symbolized Imperial Russia.

The red star was used in communist media as early as in 1908 with the publication of the novel Red Star by Bolshevik revolutionary Alexander Bogdanov, which describes a technologically advanced communist civilization on Mars.

Much has happened in the last eight decades, but the red stars on top of the Kremlin’s towers have survived. They are symbols of a bygone era and a reminder of the country’s communist past.

The Spasskaya Tower (Russian: Спасская башня, romanized:Spasskaya bashnya), also translated as the Saviour Tower, is the main tower on the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin which overlooks Red Square. The Spasskaya Tower was built in 1491 by the Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari.

Under the Soviet Union, Stalin replaced the imperial symbol of the two-headed eagle on top of the Spasskaya Tower with a red star, and its height with the star is 233 feet (71 metres). The Spasskaya Tower is one of Moscow's most emblematic landmarks.
