Listed in this article are flags — federal, administrative, military, etc. — used between the time of the Tsardom of Russia (1547–1721), Russian Empire (1721–1917) and today's Russian Federation (1991–present day).

The State Flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, also simply known as the Soviet flag or the Red Banner, [1] was a red flag with two communist symbols displayed in the canton: a gold hammer and sickle topped off by a red five-point star bordered in gold.

To the decree is attached a very well known photo of Evgueni Khaldei which shows the Soviet soldier putting the Soviet Flag on the Reichstag, but there is just a star on the flag.

The Soviet constitution mandated the national flag’s design, and that flag, with minor modifications, was effective from January 31, 1924, to the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 31, 1991 (although the Russian flag replaced the Soviet one on the Kremlin in Moscow on December 25).
