The Tier 1 coverage allows students to be seen at Stanford University Medical Center, Menlo Medical Clinic, or Sutter Health. For office visits and most outpatient services (excluding surgery), students pay only a $25 copayment, and Cardinal Care covers the balance.

Cardinal Care is an annual plan and students must make their health insurance decision every year, by the waiver deadline of their entry quarter. Cardinal Care Subsidy. The University’s Cardinal Care student health insurance plan is managed by the Vaden Health Center . The Financial Aid Office administers an automatic University-wide subsidy program for Graduate students. The annual cost of Cardinal Care for the 2024–2025 academic year is $7,620.

To ensure that students have sufficient health insurance coverage during their academic career at Stanford, the University will require that all students enroll in Cardinal Care, the University-sponsored student health insurance plan.

Our medical plans provide coverage for preventative care, preexisting conditions, prescription drugs, as well as mental health services. Stanford offers four medical plan options — three nationwide plans administered by Aetna and a Kaiser HMO.
