When d’Erlon’s French infantry came up the slope, Wellington unleashed the Union Brigade – British, Irish and Scottish heavy cavalry. They crashed through the French columns, sabering men, and Sergeant Charles Ewart of the Scots Greys captured an Imperial eagle, a massive propaganda victory. But the charge didn’t stop. Wild with success, the horsemen galloped too far, into fresh French reserves and artillery. Many were cut down; the brigade was wrecked as a fighting force. Ewart, hero of the hou
