The day after Coventry Cathedral was bombed on 14th November 1940, Provost Howard made a commitment not to seek revenge but to strive for forgiveness and ultimately reconciliation with those responsible, at the time seen to be very radical thinking as we were still at war with Germany. In this BBC Radio clip 6 weeks after the Blitz, Provost Howard gave a message on Christmas Day on building a kinder, more Christ-like world, a message that that Cathedral holds close to this day. 🎧 BBC recording,

Coventry Cathedral is one of the most powerful symbols of peace and resilience in the UK. The original cathedral was destroyed during the Blitz in 1940, and instead of rebuilding the ruins, the city chose to keep them as a reminder of hope. Right beside it stands the stunning modern cathedral, opened in 1962, celebrating reconciliation and new beginnings. A place where history, art, and faith come together beautifully. | Jannatul Forain Nishu

Next Tuesday join Canon Kate Massey for Arts and Reconciliation at Coventry Cathedral for the beginning of the five week module “In a Divided World, What Can I Do?” We will use real stories of reconciliation to think about what reconciliation looks like today, in our lives. And we will think about how being people of reconciliation might be a powerful way to share in God’s mission in the world. The course takes place over 5 weeks and costs £25. At the heart of Christian worship is the profound truth that we are reconciled to God through Jesus. Yet there are moments when reconciliation needs to be brought to the forefront of worship, when the church is called to speak healing into the life of a community, congregation or nation. If you are interested in exploring the role of Reconciliation in Liturgy more, join the Reconciliation Pathways course on Tuesday 23rd September led by Canon Nitano Muller designed for those seeking hands on exp

We’re hosting a conference on “Reconciliation in a Time of Conflict” from 10am-3.30pm on Saturday 18th October at Coventry Cathedral. Drawing upon experiences from the Holy Land and Ukraine, what does the Christian ministry of reconciliation look like in a time of conflict? What are the challenges faced by those in the context of war, and what might we learn about being reconcilers in a society increasingly characterised by cultural division and conflict? This event is being held in the John Lai

As part of the ODI100 celebrations, RAF Odiham’s Padre visited The Cathedral Church St Michael, Coventry to reflect on a shared history. On the 14th November 1940, Coventry was hit by an 11 hour raid, codenamed “Moonlight Sonata” resulting in devastation of the city. Amongst the ruins, the Cathedral sustained catastrophic damage, the only Cathedral to be destroyed in the Second World War. In the 1960’s, a new Cathedral was constructed, next to the grounds of the old ruins. The decision to leave

Tomorrow marks 85 years since St. Michael’s Cathedral was bombed during the Coventry Blitz. Here are some of the final images of what the inside of the Cathedral looked before being destroyed. The shell of the Cathedral remains as the Ruins standing side by side the New Cathedral that opened in 1962 to remind us of our human capacity both to destroy and reach out to our enemies in reconciliation. Tomorrow we honour the lives lost tragically on 14th November 1940 while reaffirming our city’s mess
