While the 1904 World's Fair story is famous, the ice cream cone's origins are more complex. A year before the fair, Italo Marchiony, an Italian immigrant in New York, received a patent for a machine that molded edible ice cream cups. He had been selling ices from a pushcart and needed to stop customers from taking his glass cups. His invention was a small, flat-bottomed, fluted edible cup.
