Tuesday marks 40 years since the MOVE bombing in Philadelphia. On May 13, 1985, Philadelphia police dropped a bomb on a rowhome on Osage Avenue in Cobbs Creek. The resulting fire was allowed to burn and spread to dozens of other homes, killing 11 people, including five children. Our Joe Holden looks back at the tragic day, 40 years later, with Mike Africa Jr., whose friends and family were in that house on Osage Ave. “I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to fully accept what happened,” Africa said.

The atrocity committed by Philadelphia police against the Black revolutionary group MOVE has no memorial, despite the fact that innocent men, women, and children were murdered, and 200 people lost their homes in the destruction. The land where the MOVE home stood, on 6221 Osage Avenue, was stolen (through eminent domain), but Mike Africa Jr. i
