The smith machine can be a great piece of equipment to utilize in your training. The stability can even make it superior to barbells for certain exercises depending on your goals. However, it's better for certain exercises than others. Don't use it for flat bench - the natural bar path for bench press is more of an arc but the Smith machine moves in a fixed path.
