The north does castles differently. . . 🏰 Northumberland has over 70 castles in its region all with immense history and tales behind them. ⠀ Bamburgh Castle was once the seat of the Kings of Northumbria, long before England existed as we know it. It later became a target during Viking incursions along this coast — a symbol of authority worth fighting for. ⠀ Further south, Dunstanburgh Castle was built on an exposed headland not for comfort, but to dominate the sea route — its isolation part of

Bamburgh Castle standing proudly on the rugged coastline of Northumberland, England, is one of the most breathtaking and historically rich fortresses in the United Kingdom. Perched dramatically on a volcanic outcrop overlooking the North Sea, its commanding presence has made it a landmark of power, defense, and legacy for more than fourteen centuries. The site was originally a Celtic fort known as Din Guarie, which became the royal seat of the kings of Northumbria during the early medieval perio

The best castle in Northumberland? Certainly high up on my list, Bamburgh Castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. The castles earliest recorded history begins in Anglo Saxon times when Northumbria was the largest and most powerful of seven kingdoms. The castle keep, the massive square structure is the oldest surviving part of the castle. Its mighty walls are eleven feet thick to the front and nine feet wide elsewhere. The Keep sits on a massive plinth to stop attackers dig

With over 70 castle sites, Northumberland has more castles than anywhere else in England, but Dunstanburgh is our top pick. Perched on the coast and surrounded by dramatic seascapes, its setting alone is simply unforgettable 🌊 Built in the 14th century, its ruins stretch along a remote headland, only accessible by a scenic walk from Craster or Embleton! We stayed 3 nights at Tom’s Hideout in Craster, a cosy and well-located base that made it easy to explore not just Dunstanburgh, but also nearb

This 4 mile hike to Dunstanburgh castle and Embleton bay is one of the best short hikes I’ve done, beginning in a small harbour village called Craster in Northumberland it’s easy going and can be made longer but for a nice morning out this is a beauty! You can explore the castle or just look from the outside and conitnue along to Embleton bay where you have a lovely beach with nice sand and blue waters! Postcards from Craster ⚓️ 🌊 the coastal village in Northumberland has been famous for centuries as a fishing port, and it’s still the home of the world-famous Craster kippers, smoked using age-old methods. From here, the Northumberland coast path leads you along dramatic cliffs to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle – a walk as full of history as it is of sea views and always one of my favourites to see. The village itself is named after the Craster family, who lived at nearby Craster Tower from t

Dunstanburgh Castle: The Fortress Its Owner Never Reached Standing on the wild cliffs of Northumberland, Dunstanburgh Castle is more than just a ruin it’s a story of ambition, rebellion, and lost power. Built in the 1300s by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, this dramatic fortress was meant to challenge a king. But fate intervened, and its creator never even reached the castle he built. From medieval wars to romantic artists and even World War II defenses, Dunstanburgh Castle has witnessed centuries of

Dunstanburgh Castle 🏰 take a 360 aerial tour around this magnificent castle sight in Northumberland Dunstanburgh Castle stretches dramatically across the cliffs of the Northumberland coast — once the largest fortress in the region. Built in 1313 by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, it was meant as both a statement of power and a potential stronghold against King Edward II. Although it never served its intended purpose during Thomas’s lifetime, it later became a key site in the Wars of the Roses and en
